AMERICAN RED CROSS IN GREATER NEW YORK RESPONDS TO QUEENS FREIGHT TRAIN DERAILMENT
Soon after a freight train carrying thousands of gallons of propane derailed at 8:53 a.m. on Tuesday, January 16, on the Maspeth/Ridgewood border of Queens, 14 members of the American Red Cross in Greater New York (ARC/GNY) arrived on the scene in several emergency response vehicles. Although the propane did not spill from the tankers and no one was injured, 58 homes were evacuated in the immediate area as a precautionary measure.

ARC/GNY opened a reception center at Intermediate School (IS) 119 at 74-01 78th Avenue, where volunteers and staff provided blankets, hot beverages and meals for 40 people (29 adults and 11 children) who were evacuated. At 2 a.m., when the train was placed back on the tracks, the residents returned to their homes and the center was closed.

“We are always ready to help New Yorkers who are affected by disasters,” said Sarah Friedenthal, director of response for New York City, American Red Cross in Greater New York. “The families handled the situation well and were grateful for our assistance.”

SDS WINS HIGHLY COVETED FORBES ENTERPRISE AWARD
Winners of the prestigious of Forbes Enterprise Awards were formally announced today. From a field of thousands of nominees, only 72 companies were selected to win the coveted award—among those chosen for this select group of extraordinary companies was SDS Global Logistics.

Companies were measured in five unique areas and needed to stand out in each of them. Those categories were: Customer Service, New Product/Service Offerings, Marketing, Employee Relations and Community Service. Judges were seemingly impressed with several key factors in SDS Global’s application. In addition to the company’s growth in sales and earnings, the nomination focused on the rebranding of the Security Delivery Service name to SDS Global Logistics; the propensity of SDS to communicate with customers through a variety of mediums ranging from its newsletter to direct contact with clients from customer service personnel; and the variety of new products added by SDS over the past few years, including the addition of warehouse facilities and a renewed focus on trade show management.

The application had also focused on how SDS serviced its non-client stakeholders such as employees and the community at large. Two items in particular were noted in the nomination of the company: the fact that SDS President and CEO, Tony Racioppo was honored for his work with the Queens Child Guidance Center and a story about how SDS raised thousands for a fellow employee whose home had been lost to a tragic fire.
